Thanks Tracy, this very useful! Do you have any tips for the kind of stuff we should be submitting to these sites?
I have had many discussions with journalists over this. Please remember that journalists do not just write for the national newspapers, indeed they write for local newspapers, national magazines, niche magazines etc.. So the possibilities of something being of value to someone is endless.
The general concensus however is that your story should be Full of information, Funny or have Feel good factor - the 3 F's.
If an article is well written, and by that I mean if you read it back out loud and it sounds good, then it will also be more likely to get used, for the simple fact that a publisher does not have to do anything to it.
Write about something you know about, use catchy headlines that can attract attention, and use key words in the content too. This helps with indexing on the search engines. So, even if your article does not get picked for use (and remember there are zillions of press releases out there, worldwide) at least your topic will get seen by the search engines.
